Recognize A Leader

Silver Beaver

The Silver Beaver Award was introduced in 1931 and is a council-level distinguished service award of Scouting America. Recipients of this award are registered Scouters who have made an impact on the lives of youth through service given at the council level.

The Scouting America Silver Beaver Award is the highest honor a local council can bestow upon a volunteer, recognizing distinguished service to youth. Introduced in 1931, this award is presented to registered Scouters for noteworthy, unselfish, and exceptional character service to the community.
Recipients are registered Scouters who have made an impact on the lives of youth through service given at the council level.

Key Details About the Award:
  • Selection & Nomination: Nominees must be registered adult volunteers. While anyone can nominate a deserving Scouter, it is a council-level decision, and self-nominations are not permitted.
  • Approval: Recipients are selected by local councils and then approved by the National Court of Honor.
  • Recognition: The award consists of a Silver Beaver medal on a blue-and-white ribbon, a certificate, a knot for the uniform, and a lapel pin.

District Award of Merit

The District Award of Merit honors Scouters who render service of an outstanding nature at the district level. Each year a district may award up to 1 award for each 25 Scouting units or fraction thereof. The recipient receives the District Award of Merit plaque and can wear the appropriate knot on their uniform.

Nomination: A Scouter may not nominate him or herself. The nominee must be a registered leader and have performed noteworthy service to youth in Scouting, outside Scouting or both. This interactive form can be printed and used as the cover for the nomination packet. Successful nominations will include additional documentation of the nominee’s background, service to Scouting and to the community, and if desired, letters of recommendation.  Complete instructions for submitting nominations are published each year in the district newsletter beginning in October or November.

The award is presented each year at the LaSalle Council Annual Awards Banquet. We regret that, due to the large number of nominees each year we are unable to award all who deserve this award. Please update and re-submit nominations in subsequent years so we can honor your nominees as availability permits.
